Mastering the Art of Goal Setting: An Effective Approach with Calvin Hexter & Steffany Hanlen
Calvin: I am here with Stephanie Hanlon, the Olympic mental performance coach for world-class athletes, entrepreneurs with really, really, really big dreams. And I might have added two extra reallys, but I think it’s important. Good to have you.
Stephanie: Thanks, Calvin. I’m so happy to be here.
Calvin: We’re so happy to have you. We had to steal you away from Paris, and you’re coming to Edmonton.
Stephanie: Well, for me, I’m more excited than I think that you guys are because Edmonton’s my hometown, and that’s where my real estate investing journey began with my husband, Patrick, in the, I think, the late 1800s. But no, in early 2000, we started investing, and the majority of our portfolio is still in Edmonton. And so is our friends, our families.
Calvin: We’re welcoming you back home, and we’re super happy to have you. One thing you talk about is pushing buttons. Now, I know that whenever I push Amanda’s buttons, my other half, it usually ends up in one of these, or I end up in the doghouse. So I think it’s probably pushing the right buttons. Can you tell me a little bit more about that? I need to learn about this.
Stephanie: Well, I think the biggest thing for me when I talk about goal-getting is I create the distinction between setting goals and getting goals. And that’s the difference between taking action. So the term I like to use is, are you in motion or are you taking action? There’s motion versus action. So goal-getting requires me as a coach to hold you accountable to what you say you want. So all I do is I call it energy matching. So if you’re giving me your goals, and I’m saying, okay, well, here’s what we’re going to do in order to get your goals, because I can’t be responsible for you getting your goals.
I’m a fabulous coach, but ultimately, it’s your life, it’s your podium, it’s your investment journey. You’re the one that has to step up. So what happens for me is I end up shining a light, and it’s so natural. I don’t mean to do it on purpose. It’s not like I’m poking the bear, but the buttons that get pushed when somebody who is as invested in your success shines a light on what you’re not doing, it can really push buttons. So when I say I’m pushing buttons, it’s really about mirroring back to you, what you said you want, and maybe helping you remove the blocks in order for you to get your goals, not just set them.
Calvin: Amazing, amazing. I mean, this is applicable to everybody, whether it’s gold medalists, day-to-day goals, relationship, very, very applicable.
Stephanie: And I love speaking, I love working with motivated investors. And to your point, Calvin, is that this work applies, gold getting applies to everyone. Yes, I just got back from Paris, where I got to see my Olympians receive gold medal and a silver medal, and go and experience that whole thing. But it is really the same. When you are living the life of an investor, and you want to be the champion in your own life, the qualities and the traits are all the same. So I’m looking forward to it, looking forward to seeing everyone.
And yeah, let’s see it. Let’s do it. Let’s go get some goals.
Calvin: Very excited to have you.
